Singapore Bolsters Air Force with F-35s and P-8A Maritime Patrol Aircraft

The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) is undergoing a significant modernization effort, incorporating advanced aircraft like the F-35 fighter jet and the P-8A maritime patrol aircraft to enhance its deterrence and defense capabilities. This comes as the RSAF adapts to an evolving security landscape and maintains a focus on readiness, according to Major-General Kelvin Fan, the RSAF chief of air force.

Singapore has ordered a total of 20 F-35 fighter jets – 12 F-35B variants and an additional eight F-35A models – solidifying its commitment to fifth-generation fighter technology. The first F-35 is expected to arrive by the end of 2026, with an initial batch of four F-35Bs, followed by eight more in 2028. The eight F-35A aircraft are scheduled to arrive around 2030.

“The training for our initial batch of F-35 pilots will subsequently begin at Ebbing Air National Guard Base, where they will be trained by qualified United States Air Force F-35 instructors and have the opportunity to train alongside and learn from other nations operating the F-35s,” Major-General Fan said.

These new aircraft will operate alongside the RSAF’s existing F-15SGs and upgraded F-16s, which are expected to remain in service into the mid-2030s. The RSAF prioritizes training and readiness, frequently conducting exercises and maintaining a visible presence in Singaporean airspace.

In addition to the F-35s, the RSAF is acquiring four Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft to replace its aging Fokker-50 fleet, which have been in service since 1993. The decision to procure the P-8As was announced in September 2025, with Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing informing his US counterpart, Pete Hegseth, during a meeting at the Pentagon.

The P-8A aircraft, widely recognized as among the most advanced maritime patrol platforms globally, will enhance Singapore’s maritime situational awareness and ability to counter sub-surface threats. They are expected to be inducted into service in the early 2030s. The RSAF will work closely with the Navy, particularly with the newly commissioned Multi-Role Combat Vessel (MRCV) – designed to support unmanned aerial, surface, and underwater vehicles – to review future requirements in the maritime domain.

The RSAF is also undertaking upgrades to its existing fleet. Life Extension Programmes are underway for the AH-64D Apache helicopters, extending their operational lifespan into the 2030s. The S-70B Seahawk Naval helicopters continue to meet mission demands. Older C-130B models are being replaced with used but well-maintained C-130H models.

Major-General Fan highlighted the importance of learning from current conflicts, stating, “Our mission is to deter and be operationally ready. We live in relative peace, but not absolute peace. World events have shown how quickly peace can disappear. 24/7 air defence is a key task for us.” The RSAF demonstrated its readiness in 2024 when two F-15SG fighters scrambled to intercept an Air India flight that received a bomb threat, ensuring its safe landing at Changi Airport.

Beyond defense, the RSAF continues to play a significant role in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) and search and rescue (SAR) operations. Over the last two years, the RSAF has participated in 10 HADR missions, including airdrops in Gaza, flood relief efforts in Australia, and aid deliveries to Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. The Airbus Helicopters H225M SAR helicopters have also performed over 10 lifesaving missions in the same period.

These acquisitions and upgrades are part of a broader strategy to bolster Singapore’s defense capabilities and maintain a technologically advanced and credible defense force, according to officials.
