The world has lost a musical icon. Roberta Flack, the renowned American singer, passed away at the age of 88. Her publicist confirmed the news in a statement, expressing profound grief. “Our heart is broken. She died in the presence of her loved ones and was unique in her kind,” the statement read.

Flack, known for timeless hits such as “Killing Me Softly With His Song” and “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” left an indelible mark on the music industry. Her performance of “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” in the 1971 film Play Misty for Me, directed by and starring Clint Eastwood, is still celebrated. For that particular performance, Flack earned two Grammy Awards, solidifying her status as a legend in the music world.

From Opera Aspirations to Pop Stardom

Roberta Flack was born into a musically inclined family in Black Mountain, North Carolina. Her journey began with playing the organ for a church choir. By age 15, she was already studying at the Howard University Conservatory of Music. After graduating, she taught English language and music in secondary schools. However, her love for opera led her to accompany singers in an opera restaurant in Washington, D.C., in 1962.

However, Flack’s singing teacher recognized that her voice was better suited for pop music. This realization became evident when Flack sang Christmas songs in the restaurant, to which the audience responded with overwhelming enthusiasm.

“People didn’t just come to hear me play for other people, they wanted to hear what I would sing between the opera songs,” she recalled about that transformative period.

After honing her skills in various local clubs, Flack was discovered in 1968 by jazz pianist Les McCann. This led to a record deal with Atlantic Records and the release of several albums throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

Killing Me Softly:’ A Career-Defining Hit

Flack’s career reached its pinnacle when she released “Killing Me Softly With His Song.” Originally composed by Lori Lieberman in 1972, the song gained worldwide fame upon Flack’s rendition, becoming a No. 1 hit in the United States and reaching No. 3 in the Dutch Top 40. The song’s timeless appeal continued with more radio friendly cover versions.

Among the many covering this song, the hip-hop group the Fugees recorded one of the most recognized covers, a No. 1 hit in the Netherlands in the Top 40, where it remained for six weeks in 1996.

Adapting to Success and Changing Identity

The immense success of “Killing Me Softly With His Song” had a transforming effect on Roberta Flack, so Flack took a step back to cope with the spotlight. She began to produce her own music, a game changer for the music industry. Throughout the following years, Roberta Flack concentrated on performing and collaborating with other artists, including jazz legend Miles Davis.

In 2003, Flack released another album featuring Christmas songs, showcasing her versatility and enduring popularity. Injuries and health issues prompted Flack to announce in 2022 that she would no longer perform or record music.

Enduring Impact and Continued Inspiration

Flack’s legacy extends beyond her music. Known for her voice and performances, she is a role model for aspiring female musicians, pointing the way to the challenges faced by women in the music industry. Flack’s costars and the public mourned her departure, highlighting her influence beyond music, acknowledging that her kindness and dedication remain an inspiration.

Danny Frank said in a statement to music fans, not a week goes by without I don’t have people write to me about how much they love Roberta’s music, how much it moves them. It’s the kind of unique synergy between an artist and the music that is incredibly rare. Roberada needed no applause, just the passion and the love from her fans.
