Widespread Service Suspensions
As of late August 2024, at least 88 postal operators around the world have either fully or partially suspended services to the United States, responding to recently imposed tariffs by the Washington governance. This disruption impacts the international flow of goods and highlights the complexities of global trade regulations, according to the universal Postal Union (UPU), the United Nations’ specialized agency for postal cooperation.
SingPost Adapts to new Regulations
SingPost, a major postal service provider, has implemented changes to navigate the new tariff landscape. Effective August 25, 2024, SingPost suspended acceptance of items with commercial value via standard services destined for the US, with the exception of letter mail without declared value.
To enhance transparency for customers, SingPost is now proactively calculating and collecting all necessary duties and taxes upfront, eliminating unexpected fees upon delivery. Neo Su Yin, SingPost group chief operating officer, emphasized that this service provides “transparency for retail customers.”
New requirements for US Customs
Customers shipping to the US through SingPost must now provide the country of manufacture and the Harmonized System (HS) code for their items. The HS code is a standardized international system of names and numbers used to classify traded products, and is now a mandatory requirement for US customs clearance.
For businesses with frequent or diverse shipping needs, SingPost recommends establishing a corporate account with dedicated account managers to streamline shipments via Speedpost Direct International. Alternatively, packages exceeding 2kg or valued over US$100 can utilize SingPost’s premium Speedpost Express International service.
