Morón de la Frontera, Spain – A seemingly idyllic town near Seville becomes the backdrop for a perplexing series of events in the Max original series, when Nobody Sees Us. The thriller, directed by Enrique Urbizu and adapted from Sergio Sarria’s novel, weaves a complex narrative involving a missing American soldier, the bizarre death of a local resident, and a disturbing incident during a Holy Week procession.
The eight-episode series initially captivates with its intriguing premise and a strong ensemble cast led by Maribel Verdú. However, the show struggles to maintain momentum, especially in its latter half. (Spoiler alert: plot details follow.)

Antonio Jiménez (Jorge suquet), a well-liked teacher, is found dead, the victim of an apparent ritualistic suicide. during a religious procession, two members of a brotherhood are incapacitated by an unknown substance.Concurrently, Johnson (Joe Manjon), an American soldier with access to sensitive information, vanishes from the nearby military base. Adding to the mystery, a local youth named Samuel (Lorca Gutiérrez Prada) also disappears. the central question: are these events connected?
Civil guard Sergeant Lucía Gutiérrez (Maribel Verdú) is tasked with unraveling these mysteries. She is joined by Magaly Castillo (Mariela Garriga), a U.S. special agent sent to investigate Johnson’s disappearance. the two women form an unlikely but effective partnership as they attempt to connect the disparate crimes.
What distinguishes When Nobody Sees Us from other thrillers is its seamless integration of the genre within the context of Andalusian culture. Military protocols and criminal investigations intertwine with the region’s distinctive music, traditions, and Holy Week celebrations, making the local customs an integral part of the narrative.
A Diverse and Talented Cast
One of the series’ strengths lies in its diverse and multicultural cast. Alongside Maribel Verdú and Mariela Garriga, the ensemble includes Dani Rovira, Carlos Beluga, and April Montilla as fellow members of the Civil Guard. Ben Temple portrays Colonel Seamus Hoopen, while María Alfonsa Rosso and Numa Paredes play the protagonist’s overbearing mother-in-law and daughter. Eloy Azorín appears as Ramón,a local waiter.
The series, created and written by Daniel Corpas, successfully creates authentic and relatable moments between the characters. The actors appear pleasant in their roles, enhancing the overall quality of the production.
Notably, the Spanish actors fluently incorporate english into their dialog, facilitating communication with their foreign counterparts in a natural and often humorous manner. This linguistic fluidity adds to the series’ authenticity.

The Enemy Within
When Nobody Sees Us employs a narrative device that reveals the killer’s identity to the audience before the characters themselves realize it.Sergeant Andrew Taylor (Austin Amelio), Agent Castillo’s colleague, is revealed to be responsible for the deaths of samuel and Johnson, and indirectly, Antonio’s suicide.
Through flashbacks, the audience learns that Taylor suffers from mental health issues and harbors a dark secret. He commits the murders in cold blood, causing despair and sadness. While it is compelling to watch Taylor operate undetected among the investigators, this approach diminishes the suspense and eliminates any potential for a final, surprising twist.
An Unresolved Conclusion
Despite its promising elements, the ending of When Nobody Sees Us feels rushed and leaves several questions unanswered. The business dealings of Hipólito Núñez (Óscar Higares) and Colonel Seamus Hoopen remain unclear, as does Núñez’s motive for introducing the ”Nazarene drug” into the town. The information Johnson possessed before his death, which implicated the colonel, is also left unresolved.
While the series avoids excessive exposition, a more detailed explanation of these interconnected plot threads would have provided a more satisfying conclusion.
When Nobody Sees Us begins with an intriguing premise that blends Spanish tradition,Japanese culture, and American militarism. The cast delivers strong performances, but the script ultimately fails to maintain consistent interest. While the series explores compelling themes, it lacks the pacing, twists, and action typically associated with the thriller genre. The complete series is available on Max.
