Conor Murphy, a newly elected Senator in the Dublin Seanad, has confirmed that Sinn Féin Vice President Michelle O’Neill‘s primary focus remains on her role as First Minister, effectively ruling out her candidacy in this year’s presidential race for Áras an Uachtarán, the Irish presidency. Murphy’s recent comments come as senior political figures in Ireland position themselves ahead of the upcoming elections.

Murphy, who formerly served as Finance Minister in the Northern Ireland Assembly, also dismissed any possibility of his own candidacy. When asked about his chances and those of other potential candidates, Murphy said, I think there’s probably more chance of Gavin Robinson, the DUP leader, standing for the presidential election than Michelle.

“I think there’s probably more chance of Gavin Robinson standing for the presidential election than Michelle. Michelle is doing a very, very good job as First Minister for all and … it is her clear intention to focus on that role and continue in that in the time ahead.”

The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) has speculated that Sinn Féin’s recent boycott of a scheduled meeting with politicians in Washington D.C. was an attempt to garner support for a presidential bid. The DUP, a political party from Northern Ireland, claimed in a letter by leader Gavin Robinson, that the press conference involving O’Neill, which took place in Dublin, was politically motivated.

OnBBC’s Sunday Politics programme, Murphy reinforced his stance, reiterating, I have absolutely no intention whatsoever. He emphasized his commitment to his work, stating, I’m in the Oireachtas to do a job, both as a senator in the Seanad but also in terms of the party in advocating for Irish unity, but also in terms of economic unity on the island, which is something I have been pursuing over the last number of years.

He also highlighted the continuing excellence of the current president, Michael Higgins and expressed interest in someone who believes in Irish unity and will champion the cause from Áras.
