Italian Tennis shines at US Open: Sinner & Musetti Set for Quarterfinal Clash
An all-Italian derby is set for the quarterfinals of the US Open. Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti will compete in a first for Italian tennis. The world number one, Sinner, advanced to the quarterfinals by convincingly defeating Alexander Bublik 6-1, 6-1, 6-1.
Sinner, sporting a complete blue outfit (having worn red and amaranth in the first week), needed just one hour and 21 minutes to overcome Bublik, one of only two players to have beaten him in 2025 alongside Carlos Alcaraz. The match was largely one-sided, with Sinner capitalizing on Bublik’s repeated errors. The match was attended by Anna Wintour, Rami Malek, and Alec Baldwin.
“I am very happy. Thanks to everyone,” Sinner said after the match. He shared a brief exchange with Bublik, who reportedly told him, “I am not bad, but you are ‘The Goat'” (Greatest of All time), eliciting a smile from Sinner.
Looking ahead to his match against Musetti, Sinner commented: “Italian tennis is in great shape and Lorenzo is one of the best. From an Italian point of view it is indeed nice to know that there will be an Italian in the semifinal”. Musetti himself secured his quarterfinal spot with a win over jaume Munar. Musetti expressed his desire to challenge Sinner, calling him “the best player in the world: a champion,” but also noted that the pressure would be on Sinner.
Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani have reached the quarter-finals of the women’s doubles, defeating Fanny Stillar and Fang-Hsien Wu 6-4, 6-3. They will face Asia Muhammad and Demi Schuurs in the next round.
Andrea Vavassori and Simone Bolelli were stopped in the round of 16 of the men’s doubles, losing a close match to Robert Cash and JJ Tracy 6-7 (4/7), 7-6 (7/2), 7-6 (10/6).
