Egypt and Turkey Strengthen Ties with Strategic Cooperation Council Meeting
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan presided over the first high-level strategic cooperation council meeting between the two countries in Ankara, Turkey.
The meeting resulted in agreements on 36 items covering various areas of joint cooperation, including bilateral relations, trade exchanges, investment exchanges, regional files, and dispute settlement.
Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation
A memorandum of understanding was signed to enhance cooperation in all fields between the two countries, with a focus on increasing bilateral trade to $15 billion, developing the investment environment, and supporting bilateral cooperation in energy, climate change, housing, and combating terrorism and organized crime.
Regional Cooperation and Stability
The two countries agreed to cooperate on regional issues, including countering Israeli violations in Gaza, supporting the Palestinians, resolving the Syrian conflict, supporting the sovereignty and stability of Iraq, and supporting the political process in Libya.
They also agreed to ensure security and stability in the Horn of Africa region and work towards a peaceful resolution of the Sudan crisis.
A New Era of Cooperation
President El-Sisi emphasized the importance of this meeting in bringing about a qualitative change in all areas of cooperation between the two countries, including the Palestinian issue and the Libyan crisis.
He also welcomed the reconciliation efforts between Turkey and Syria, calling for a political solution to be achieved in accordance with the Security Council’s resolution on the matter.
Reconciliation and Normalization
The visit marks a significant step towards reconciliation between Turkey and Egypt after a decade of separation, with the two countries exchanging ambassadorial appointments last year.
The Turkish president visited Cairo last February, following months of talks between the two countries aimed at resuming ties.
