Sixers to Re-Sign Cameron Payne After EuroLeague Stint
The Philadelphia 76ers are poised to add guard Cameron Payne to their roster for the remainder of the season, Marc Stein reported Monday. Payne will sign a contract after reaching a buyout agreement with Partizan Belgrade, his Serbian club.
This marks a return to Philadelphia for the 31-year-old, who previously played for the Sixers during the 2023-24 season after being acquired in a trade with the Milwaukee Bucks. In 31 games with the team, he averaged 9.3 points and 3.1 assists, quickly becoming a valued contributor off the bench.
Payne’s impact extended beyond statistics. Teammates consistently praised his positive attitude and energy. “He’s so positive,” said Tyrese Maxey after Payne’s performance in Game 3 of the playoff series against the New York Knicks. “Everybody says I’m positive, but he’s extremely positive. He’s just jumping around, having a great time. He makes you want to go out there and really compete with your brothers. And he’s always vocal on the bench… He’s always telling everybody, ’Stay aggressive, stay ready, go out there and be who you are.’ So we appreciate him for being who he was tonight.”
During his first stint with the Sixers, Payne also showcased his ability to perform in the playoffs, contributing 11 points on efficient shooting in a Game 3 victory over the Knicks.
Prior to returning to the NBA, Payne spent this season with Partizan Belgrade, where he averaged 12.4 points and 3.9 assists over 10 EuroLeague games. He had initially been waived by the Indiana Pacers after participating in training camp last fall before signing with the Serbian club in December.
The Sixers’ need for guard depth has been apparent, particularly following recent games where Quentin Grimes was sidelined due to illness. The team’s front office, led by Daryl Morey, had expressed intentions to add to the roster after dealing Jared McCain at the trade deadline, but ultimately found no moves that significantly improved the team.
According to Hoops Rumors, Partizan Belgrade will receive a $1.75MM buyout fee to release Payne. The Sixers will contribute up to $875K towards the buyout, and must obtain a Letter of Clearance from FIBA before finalizing the deal.
Philadelphia currently has 13 players under standard contracts, leaving room for two additional players on prorated veteran minimum contracts without exceeding the luxury tax threshold. Payne’s arrival provides a familiar face and a potentially valuable rotation piece as the Sixers navigate the remainder of the season with a 30-24 record.
