Siya Kolisi Thriving at Number Eight for Sharks
Kolisi Thriving at no. 8, Leads Sharks to Champions Cup Victory
Durban, South Africa – Springboks captain Siya Kolisi is relishing his new role at number eight for the Sharks, saying the position allows him to be more involved in the game. Kolisi’s dynamic performance, which included two tries, helped propel the Sharks to a convincing 39-21 victory over Exeter Chiefs in thier Champions Cup opener.
“I’m loving it – that’s were I started playing rugby, at 8th man,” Kolisi said after the match. “That’s where coach Rassie (Erasmus) spotted me when I was at school so it’s really good to get back to it. I’m getting the ball in my hands more… I’m more involved in the game and I’m enjoying it.”
The shift to number eight has seen Kolisi become a central figure in the Sharks’ attack, with his powerful runs and offloading ability causing havoc for opposing defenses.
Despite the impressive win, Kolisi acknowledged the tough challenge posed by Exeter Chiefs.
“It was a tough game, credit to Exeter. The way they started the game – we thought it was going to go the other way. I think they’re one of the most physical sides from England,” Kolisi admitted. “But we stuck to our guns and fought back and we got a loose ball and were able to score from that so I’m glad of how we kept our composure.”
The Sharks are off to a strong start in the Champions Cup, but Kolisi knows the competition is fierce.
“We certainly know it’s going to be hard. The Investec champions Cup is so difficult – you have to win all the games to put yourself in the ‘home’ play-off spot. So this is the start, we’ve got to keep going,” he said.
