CCPC Issues Compliance Notice to Celebrity Chef
Celebrity chef donal Skehan received a compliance notice on July 28 from the competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) of Ireland regarding an improperly labeled sponsored post on his Instagram account. The CCPC’s inspection revealed a failure to clearly disclose the commercial nature of the content, specifically a promotion for Wind Shore Goods, a company specializing in premium olive oils and kitchen pantry items.
the notice mandates that Skehan clearly indicate in all future sponsored posts when a trader has financially compensated him for promoting a product or service.
Increased Scrutiny of Influencer Marketing
This action by the CCPC coincides with a new data-sharing agreement between the CCPC and the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). This agreement, formalized on August 25, 2025, allows the ASA to share information received thru its online reporting portal with the CCPC, while adhering to data protection regulations, according to RTÉ News. The goal is to provide the CCPC with greater access to public reports of potential consumer protection law violations.
Beyond Disclosure: Truth in Advertising
Consumer protection law requires social media influencers to avoid misleading consumers through unfair practices, including concealed or incorrectly labeled advertising. While proper labeling of sponsored content is crucial, it’s not sufficient.A post can still be deemed a breach of the law even with correct labeling if the content itself contains false or misleading information.
