KANSAS CITY — Tarik Skubal delivered seven scoreless innings for the Detroit Tigers on Sunday, increasing their lead in the American League Central to 9 1/2 games over the Kansas City Royals, despite a 5-0 loss. Skubal’s performance came after an early scare during the game, according to reporting from MLB.com.
The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner allowed only four hits and struck out four batters. This marked his 11th start of the season where he has pitched at least six innings without allowing a run, breaking a tie with Denny McLain for the most such starts in franchise history.
“Anytime your name is thrown around with those types of names, especially in Tigers’ history, it’s an honor,”
Skubal said.
Manager A.J. Hinch anticipated a significant outcome from Sunday’s game, stating that the Tigers would either increase their division lead to 7 1/2 games or extend it to 9 1/2 games. Hinch expressed confidence in Skubal’s ability to deliver a strong performance.
The Tigers’ offense broke through in the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run triple from catcher Jake Rogers. Center fielder Tyler Tolbert lost track of the ball during the play. Detroit added three more scoreless innings after Skubal’s departure, handing the game over to the bullpen.
Skubal explained his approach, noting that he focused on inducing soft contact rather than relying solely on strikeouts, particularly given the Royals’ recent improvement in their chase rate.
“The game isn’t about striking everybody out,”
Skubal said.
“Would I love to do that? Yeah, 100 percent. But it’s about getting outs however you can get them. That team doesn’t strike out a ton. Especially in the last month, their strikeout numbers are way down.”
Skubal said.
Prior to Sunday’s game, Skubal had experienced an injury scare, though details of the issue were not immediately available. He was able to continue pitching effectively despite the early concern.
The win increased the Tigers’ record and solidified their position in the AL Central. With one month remaining in the season, Detroit appears well-positioned to contend for a playoff berth. The Royals, meanwhile, continue to struggle in the division.
Skubal’s performance underscores his importance to the Tigers’ success. His ability to consistently deliver quality starts has been a key factor in Detroit’s improved standing in the American League Central. The Tigers will look to continue their strong play as they approach the postseason.
