Veteran TV producer Grant Mansfield defends Alex Honnold’s upcoming free solo climb of the Taipei 101 skyscraper, arguing that criticism focusing solely on the spectacle misses the core motivation of the athlete.The climb, a global broadcast for netflix, is scheduled for Saturday at 8 p.m. ET, following a one-day postponement due to hazardous weather conditions. Mansfield’s Plimsoll Productions is the lead producer of Skyscraper Live, the Netflix broadcast. Plimsoll also produced Honnold’s recent documentaries, The Devil’s Climb and Arctic Ascent with Alex Honnold, both for National Geographic.Mansfield described his company’s relationship with Honnold as an effective exclusive TV partnership, despite the lack of a formal contract.
“The thing he kept saying was that he’s always wanted to climb a huge skyscraper in general – and Taipei 101 in particular,” mansfield explained.
