The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has officially released its highly anticipated 2024 International Basketball Migration Report, which shows an unprecedented surge in player movement around the world.

According to details shared on Thursday, this 13th annual report, prepared in collaboration with the Center for International Sports Studies (CIES), shows that the number of movements recorded in the 2023-24 season reached 13,149, with the number of international This shows that transfers are increasing significantly. This number exceeds previous benchmarks and shows basketball’s global expansion.

The report marks a notable increase from the 11,787 transfers recorded in the 2022-23 season, and a 113% increase from the start of the report since the 2010-11 season. In terms of gender, male players recorded 10,051 transfers and female players recorded 3,098 transfers, both new records.

A notable trend is that 20% of players who complete an international transfer do so twice within the same calendar year, demonstrating the dynamic nature of player movement in sport.

Geographically, the United States is the largest supplier of basketball talent, exporting 2,050 players. Spain and France follow, supplying 708 and 630 people respectively. In particular, the percentage of foreign players on NBA rosters has reached 18% and the WNBA’s 9%, with leagues in Spain, Germany and Italy having the highest concentration of foreign talent. In addition, Argentina is home to the most U21 players due to player participation promotion regulations, and U21 players enjoy the most playing time in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA).

The report also highlights an emerging trend of increasing player transfers to Australia, particularly from Germany and England. On the other hand, the African continent has a good balance between exporting and importing players.

Focusing on college basketball, the report points to a record influx of international players into NCAA Division I basketball, with 826 men’s international players joining the college rankings, an increase of 5.8% over last season. It shows. In addition, women’s college basketball participation reached 828 new players, representing a 7.1% increase.

FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis thanked CIES for its efforts in presenting this important data. “This collaboration was essential to tracking growth trends in player movement and the analysis we receive from the league.”

Zagklis also commented on the implications of these findings. “With the number of international transfers now exceeding 13,000, we are committed to continuing to monitor this trend closely. It is important that we understand the factors that influence player movement.”

He further emphasized the importance of FIBA’s role, saying, “Millions of players and 212 national federations around the world rely on FIBA ​​to protect and promote basketball. “Understanding this is critical to fulfilling this role.”
