Basketball Without Borders Asia Tournament Set for September 2020
The NBA and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) have partnered with Australia’s National Basketball League (NBL) to host the 14th Basketball Without Borders (BWB) Asia tournament from September 19-22 at Warwick Stadium in Australia.
Since its inception in 2001, Basketball Without Borders has provided opportunities for over 4,500 participants from 142 countries and regions. Notably, 127 participants have gone on to become NBA or WNBA players. The camp has been held 77 times globally, including in Melbourne in 2016 and Canberra in 2022.
The upcoming camp will feature 60 top high school athletes from over 20 countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Japan will be represented by six athletes, including Shogo Takada, Ginga Senbo, and Daiki Tanaka from the boys’ side, and Otoha Goto, An Kanazawa, and Yui Kiyoto from the girls’ side.
The coaching lineup boasts an impressive array of current and former players from the NBA, WNBA, and FIBA. Notable coaches include NBA champion Aron Baynes and four-time WNBA champion Cynthia Cooper.
The training program will encompass both on-court and off-court skills development. On-court training will focus on basketball skills, including offensive and defensive skill stations, a three-point contest, and five-on-five games. Off-court training will emphasize life skills and leadership development sessions.
The final ceremony will recognize outstanding players with awards, including the Kim Bowney Camp MVP, Patrick Baumann Sportsmanship Award, Three-Point Champion, and Defensive MVP.
