Slam Dunk or Flop: The $15 Million Mansion of a Basketball Legend That Refuses to Sell
Michael Jordan’s Luxurious Chicago Mansion Remains Unsold for 12 Years
The luxurious Chicago mansion of ’Basketball Emperor’ Michael Jordan has been on the market for 12 years, but it remains unsold.
According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Jordan’s 5,202㎡ (1,573 pyeong) mansion in Highland Park, a suburb of Chicago, was put up for sale in 2012. Initially, the asking price was $29 million (about 38.5 billion won), but it was later reduced to $15 million (19.9 billion won) due to a lack of interest.
Despite efforts to attract buyers, including a promotional video in English and Chinese, the mansion has yet to find an owner. The real estate industry attributes this to the fact that the mansion reflects Michael Jordan’s tastes too much.
Mansion Features
The mansion boasts an impressive array of features, including:
- Two floors above ground and one floor below ground
- Nine bedrooms and 19 bathrooms
- A study, movie theater, home bar, and smoking room
- Indoor and outdoor basketball courts, swimming pools, and a fitness center
- A tennis court, golf practice range, and guest house
A large plaque with Jordan’s signature number, ’23’, is prominently displayed at the main entrance. Additionally, Jordan’s silhouette with the Nike logo is featured in various places throughout the mansion.
The mansion also includes unique features such as a tobacco storage facility, poker table, and an aquarium brought from the Playboy Mansion in Chicago.
Challenges in Selling the Mansion
Highland Park City officials cite limited parking and zoning as major obstacles to selling the mansion. Additionally, the location is not ideal, as it is about two miles from Lake Michigan, which is a desirable feature for many potential buyers.
Despite these challenges, the mansion continues to attract attention. Tourists often take pictures at the entrance, and some have even attempted to break in.
