Slankova Upsets Second Seed Burel to Reach Quarterfinals
In the second round of the women’s singles at the WTA Tour official Jasmine Open Tunisia (WTA250 / Monastir, Tunisia / September 9-15 / total prize money of $267,082 / hard court), Rebecca Slankova (Slovakia) pulled off a stunning upset, defeating second seed Clara Burel (France) 7-6 (4) 7-5 to advance to the quarterfinals.
After losing the first set in a tiebreak, Burel broke her opponent’s serve twice in the second set at 4-4, but Slankova won the final three games to take the victory in two hours. Slankova, who was seeded down, will next face Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain, who defeated Jana Fett of Croatia 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.
Starodubtseva Defeats Third-Seeded Parry to Reach Quarterfinals
In other matches, Yulia Starodubtseva of Ukraine beat third-seeded Diane Parry of France 6-4, 6-4, and Sonay Kartal of Great Britain beat Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima 6-2, 6-2 to set up a quarterfinal showdown between the two qualifiers.
