The Link Between Sleep Apnea and Viral Susceptibility

The study, led by Dr. Alex Gileles-Hillel, and Dr. Joel Reiter from the Faculty of Medicine at the Hebrew University, along with Dr. David Gozal from Marshall University, tracked data from over 1 million children aged 2 to 18 using the TriNetX global health database. Researchers found that children with OSA had an 80% higher risk of contracting the flu and were 2.5 times more likely to be diagnosed with COVID-19.

OSA, characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep, affects an estimated 1% to 4% of otherwise healthy children. While commonly recognized for causing snoring and daytime fatigue, the study highlights a previously underappreciated impact on the immune system. The risk of developing COVID pneumonia was even more pronounced, with children with OSA exhibiting a nearly 26-fold increase in risk (risk ratio of 25.96). These findings emphasize the potential for OSA to contribute to more serious respiratory complications.

Why Does Sleep Apnea Impact Immunity?

While the exact mechanisms linking OSA and increased infection risk are still being investigated, researchers believe that disrupted sleep patterns and intermittent hypoxia (low oxygen levels) associated with OSA play a key role. These factors can impair the function of immune cells, reducing the body’s ability to effectively fight off viral infections.

Implications for Public Health

The study’s authors suggest that a diagnosis of OSA should prompt consideration of consistent seasonal vaccinations to prevent severe respiratory complications.
