Sligo Man Jailed 20 Years for Decades of Sexual Abuse Against His Children
A man from Sligo, Ireland, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the sexual abuse of five of his children. Noel Farrell, 70, pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to multiple counts of sexual abuse committed against his four daughters and one son over a period of two decades.
The sentencing, handed down on , followed a case described by Mr Justice Tony Hunt as one he “suspected would stand out in his memory ‘for all the wrong reasons.’” The judge highlighted the “extreme cruelty and gravity of the offending,” stating, “We see truly shocking. One runs out of words in trying to describe the depths plumbed in this particular case.”
According to reports, the children were subjected to horrific conditions, including being locked in a room for days without food and being forced to drink urine. Mr Justice Hunt acknowledged the profound impact of the abuse, describing it as a “grotesque breach of parental trust” and praising the victims for their “extraordinary degree of fortitude and courage” in facing their lives after enduring such trauma.
The court heard victim impact statements detailing the long-lasting effects of the abuse on the siblings’ mental health, relationships, and overall lives. Some of the victims also spoke about struggles with addiction and their experiences in the care system.
While the initial headline sentence was set at 30 years, it was reduced to 20 years following consideration of Farrell’s guilty plea. Mr Justice Hunt determined that a post-release supervision order was unnecessary, reasoning that if Farrell were to be released from custody, he would be extremely elderly.
Farrell, of Rathedmond Estate, Sligo, showed no visible reaction to the sentence. In contrast, the complainants embraced each other in the courtroom following the verdict. Four of the five children chose to waive their right to anonymity, allowing for Farrell to be publicly identified in reporting. The fifth child opted not to be named but also wished for Farrell’s identity to be revealed.
This case marks another instance of child sexual abuse coming to light in the Sligo region. In , a Sligo man received an 11-year sentence for rape and sexual assault of three children over three decades. A 36-year-old man from Sligo pleaded guilty in to possession of child sexual abuse images.
