Nigel Canavan Sentenced to Life for Sligo Mother’s Murder
Nigel Canavan, 39, will spend his life in prison for the murder of his 58-year-old mother, Angela canavan, in Sligo two years ago. Canavan alleged he acted in self-defense, claiming provocation during the fatal incident where he strangled and smothered her.
The jury rejected Canavan’s defense, convicting him of murder last month. Angela Canavan, who resided at St. john’s terrace in Sligo, had a history of health challenges, including a brain injury sustained in 2019 and struggles with alcoholism.
During the trial, Canavan testified that his mother verbally abused him, stating he was the “worst son” and that she regretted having him.He further claimed she physically attacked him. However, the evidence revealed Angela Canavan suffered severe injuries, including a head laceration, broken ribs, extensive bruising, and signs of strangulation and smothering, suggesting a struggle.

Keith Canavan, Angela’s other son, delivered a moving victim impact statement, describing his mother as his “hero” who overcame adversity and inspired him with her pursuit of education in psychotherapy. He remembered her as a caring, kind, and devoted woman who championed the underdog.
Keith Canavan disputed the portrayal of his mother during the trial, emphasizing her fear of having her neck touched and the horror of her final moments. He expressed the profound grief and unanswered questions that continue to haunt the family.
He accused his brother of showing no remorse and attempting to scapegoat their mother to shield himself from responsibility. He said Nigel took not only her life but her dignity.
The court also heard that Nigel Canavan had a prior incident in February 2023,when he crashed his car while intoxicated and confronted the other driver with a hurl, leading to guilty pleas for drunk driving and assault.
Following a separation from his wife, Canavan had been living with his mother. On the May bank holiday in 2023,after working at a hotel and consuming vodka,he called emergency services to report finding his mother dead. He initially told police he found her after hearing loud bangs following an argument.
During his testimony, Canavan admitted to being present at the time of his mother’s death but claimed she had provoked him with abuse and self-inflicted wounds.
Mr. Justice Kerida Naidoo said the eloquence of Keith canavan’s victim impact statement spoke for itself.
Justice Naidoo acknowledged Angela Canavan as a “well loved, accomplished person” and imposed the mandatory life sentence, stating that a mother’s death at the hands of her child is beyond comprehension.
