Food Prices in Slovakia Rise Sharply, Exceeding Euro Area Average

Rising Costs Burden European Consumers
Expensive foods are continuing to strain household budgets across Europe, leaving many feeling financially worse off than before the pandemic and the war in Ukraine. According to a european Commission report, approximately one-third of European Union residents are concerned about their ability to afford food
as of 2025.
On average, food prices in euro-paying countries are one-third higher than they were before the pandemic.
Slovakia Experiences Significant Food Price Increases
The situation is particularly acute in Slovakia,where food prices have increased by nearly 50% as the end of 2019. Data from the European Central Bank (ECB) indicates that Slovakia has experienced the second-highest food price increase among euro area countries, trailing only the Baltic states.
Among all euro area countries, food prices grew faster in Slovakia only in the Baltic countries.
Factors Driving Up Food Prices
Several factors are contributing to the rise in food prices, including increased costs for agro-commodities, energy, fertilizers, and transportation. Rising wages in the agriculture and food sectors, and also the impacts of climate change, are also playing a role.
