She was one of the most popular singers of her time,uniquely boasting millions of albums sold – a testament to her widespread appeal.
Her travels brought her into contact with some of the most influential artistic figures of the 20th century.”In Leningrad, I met composer Dimitri Šostakovič at the concert of the leningrad Philharmonic,” she recalled in an interview, a moment highlighting the respect she commanded within the classical music world. Despite this international recognition,Olláryová noted she often received greater acclaim abroad than in her native Czechoslovakia. Interestingly, she readily transitioned from the spotlight to a more grounded life, working as a saleswoman of turntables in the Opus store on Leningradská Street, demonstrating a practical side frequently enough unseen in performers.
A Life Touched by Tragedy
Beneath the glamorous facade of a triumphant singer lay a heart burdened by immense sorrow. Olláryová openly shared the pain of losing two sons, a grief that deeply impacted her life. “I hurt the most that I was not indulged in my children. I gave birth to two boys, but unfortunately, thay didn’t stay hear,” she confessed, revealing a deeply personal struggle.The first son lived only a single day, a loss attributed to medical negligence related to Rh factor incompatibility. “I lost my first boy with doctors. Since my husband and I had different Rh factors,it was necessary to replace the tiny blood,but they did not do it. He had a chance of survival,but the disaster could no longer be prevented. He lived only one day.” her second pregnancy ended in heartbreak when doctors discovered a deceased fetus in the sixth month. “They picked him out of me. It was terrible. Where I went, I cried there…” she recounted, her words painting a vivid picture of unimaginable pain.
Adding to her sorrow, Olláryová experienced the loss of her husband at the age of fifty-two to leukemia.”I widowed as a fifty-two. My husband was only fifty-four years old when he got leukemia. At the same time, he was never sick before,” she shared. The passing of her parents and sister further compounded her sense of isolation, leaving her to navigate life’s challenges alone. She chose not to remarry after his death, remaining devoted to his memory.
Facing Final Challenges and a Lasting Legacy
Despite the hardships she faced,Olláryová maintained a resilient spirit,even finding humor in the face of age-related ailments. “I have arthrosis, cokearthrosis, osteoporosis and sometimes sclerosis. All the roses. I throw them out the window,” she joked, showcasing her characteristic wit.
However, a fall in her apartment marked a turning point. She lay undiscovered for three days, dehydrated and weakened, until a cleaning lady alerted the authorities. While she underwent surgery, Olláryová lost her will to recover, her appetite for life diminished.
Melánia Olláryová passed away in Bratislava on January 19, 2013, at the age of 84. Her death marked the end of an era, leaving behind a rich musical legacy and a poignant story of a woman who triumphed over adversity with grace and unwavering spirit. She remains a beloved figure in Slovak cultural history, remembered not only for her remarkable talent but also for her courage in sharing her deeply personal struggles.
