Coalition fractures over ministerial dismissal
Prime Minister Robert Fico withdrew his own government proposal to remove Taraba, triggering a political crisis within the ruling coalition.
Andrej Danko, leader of the SNS which originally nominated Taraba to the post, criticized the prime minister’s move as a violation of the coalition pact. Danko stated that Fico’s reversal grants the SNS a legitimate mandate to call on both Smer and Hlas to support removing the environment minister.
Roman Michelko, chairman of the SNS parliamentary club, acknowledged that the outcome remains uncertain while confirming the party’s intent to back the motion. Meanwhile, Taraba has indicated he has no intention of resigning from office voluntarily.
Procedural showdown in parliament
Progresívne Slovensko (PS) plans to introduce a motion to prioritize the ministerial recall debate on the parliamentary agenda. Securing passage requires a simple majority of deputies present in the chamber.
Michal Šimečka, leader of Progresívne Slovensko, warned against delays, arguing that stalling provides an opportunity for political maneuvering and backroom negotiations.
Danko expressed confidence that the parliamentary proceedings concerning the dismissal would commence, while dismissing rumors that MIRRI Minister Samuel Migaľ and State Secretary Radomír Šalitroš intend to return to parliamentary seats.
