BILLINGS — A slow-moving area of low pressure continued to move over Wyoming, Montana and southern Canada on Thursday, bringing cooler-than-average conditions to the region as the last week of April unfolds.

The weather system, centered over Idaho, is expected to produce rain and snow across southern Montana and northern Wyoming, with 1 to 2 inches of snowfall anticipated in lower elevations and isolated totals exceeding 2 inches in higher terrain. As the system exits the area, warmer and drier conditions are forecast to return.

This pattern follows a notable cooldown observed earlier in the week across Montana and Wyoming, where another storm brought light rain and snow, with heavier accumulations in mountainous areas. The sustained cool temperatures have kept the region below seasonal averages for several days, contributing to the prolonged spring chill.

According to the National Weather Service in Glasgow, the next low pressure system will bring steady rainfall to much of northeastern Montana, with most areas expecting between 0.25 and 0.50 inches of precipitation. Higher elevations may see enhanced amounts due to orographic lift, though thunderstorm activity remains isolated.

The Weather Prediction Center notes that colder air will continue to ooze southward from Canada behind a strong cold front, maintaining March-like temperatures across Montana and the Dakotas through the end of the work week. This contrasts with fire weather concerns developing farther south, where gusty winds and low humidity are increasing risks from Colorado to the Mexico border.

Despite the active weather to the north, forecasters indicate that the current system will gradually weaken as it moves eastward, allowing for a gradual warming trend to begin by the weekend. However, another major winter storm is tracking toward the northern U.S. And southern Canada, potentially bringing additional snow and severe weather to the Great Plains and Midwest in the coming days.

For residents of Billings and surrounding areas, the persistent cool spell has delayed typical spring warmth, keeping daytime highs below average for late April. Meteorologists advise staying prepared for variable conditions, including sudden changes in precipitation and temperature, particularly in elevated terrain.
