A recent study shows that blood sugar levels may play a vital role in how the brain ages. Researchers found a link between lower blood sugar markers and reduced brain shrinkage and neuron death as people age. This study builds on earlier research that linked the Mediterranean diet, especially a plant-heavy version, to better brain health.

The research involved 224 participants, averaging 51 years old, who were either obese or had high fat levels in their blood. For 18 months, they followed one of three diets: a Mediterranean diet, a green Mediterranean diet, or a standard healthy diet.

Results indicated that those on the Mediterranean diets, particularly the green form, experienced slower brain aging. Participants who consumed more green tea and Mankai duckweed shakes showed the least brain tissue wear. This suggests that plant-based foods are beneficial for brain health.

Polyphenols in these plant foods may cross the blood-brain barrier, reducing inflammation critical for memory. Although direct cause and effect cannot be confirmed, the evidence suggests that Mediterranean diets are good for brain health, driven primarily by low sugar levels and high plant content.

This research offers a simple way to potentially slow brain aging: adopting elements of the green Mediterranean diet. The findings were published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
