Sylvester Stewart, known as sly Stone, the pioneering force behind Sly & the Family Stone, has died at age 82. Stone passed away after a prolonged struggle with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and other health complications.
Stone’s family released a statement acknowledging his death and celebrating his lasting impact.”It is indeed with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved dad, Sly Stone,” the statement read. They noted his “remarkable musical legacy will continue to resonate and inspire.”
Born in denton,Texas,Stone relocated to California during his childhood. He began performing with his siblings at age 4. Before forming Sly & the Family Stone, he worked as a keyboardist and producer for Autumn Records. The band, known for its blend of funk, R&B, soul, and motown, tackled themes ranging from lightheartedness to social issues.
Sly & the Family Stone achieved widespread fame with hits like “Dance to the Music,” “Everyday People,” and “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin).” Despite the band’s breakup in 1975, Stone continued to release music under the same name. After a period away from the spotlight due to substance abuse, he returned to the stage in 2006 at the Grammy Awards.
