Sly Stone, Funk Music Pioneer, Dies at 82
Sylvester Stewart, known as Sly Stone, the frontman of Sly And The Family Stone, died at 82. Stone’s family confirmed that the funk music innovator passed away after struggling with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other health complications.
Sly And The Family Stone, formed in 1966, became known for fusing soul, rock, psychedelia, and gospel. The band achieved mainstream success in the late 1960s and 1970s with hits like “Dance to the Music,” “I Want To Take You Higher,” and “Hot fun in the Summertime.” Stone played a key role in popularizing funk music, influencing numerous artists across genres.
Stone’s family, in a statement released by his publicist, expressed sadness while celebrating his musical legacy. They noted his recent completion of a screenplay based on his life story, following a 2024 memoir.
