SmackDown Recap: Jelly Rolls into SNME (July 11, 2025)
WWE NXT: A Mixed Bag of Mayhem and Missed Opportunities
Table of Contents
This week’s NXT delivered a show that was, in a word, fine. While there were moments of genuine excitement and intriguing storylines, the overall impression was one of a show that played it safe, leaving fans wanting a bit more. The wrestling itself was largely solid, but the booking decisions and narrative progression felt somewhat predictable, particularly concerning the looming tag team title picture.
The Tag Team Turmoil Continues
The most prominent storyline dominating the tag team division, and indeed much of the show, revolves around the Wyatt Sicks and their quest for the tag team championships. After being thwarted by the rest of the division in previous attempts, the Sicks were granted another shot. However,as has been the pattern, their match against a team specializing in a contrasting style proved to be a rather uninspired affair. Despite being positioned as fan favorites, the Sicks resorted to rule-breaking tactics to secure their victory, a move that surprisingly garnered a notable pop from the crowd. While the effort to build them up is evident, the execution leaves much to be desired, raising questions about the long-term viability of this push.
Adding to the tag team chaos, the rest of the division was shown once again in a state of disarray, arguing over who would be the one to finally stop the Wyatt Sicks. In a development that feels more like a formality than a groundbreaking alliance, Andrade and Rey Fenix have seemingly joined forces, throwing their names into the hat for contention. While their in-ring chemistry is undeniable, this pairing feels like a predictable move in a division struggling for fresh narratives.
Alexa bliss and Charlotte Flair’s Uneasy Alliance
In a preview of the tag team title match set for Evolution, Alexa Bliss and charlotte Flair found themselves once again at odds, their “not friends yet” dynamic continuing to be a recurring theme. Their Fatal 4-Way match, though, was a highlight of the show. Sol Ruca, in particular, impressed with a spectacular double Sol Snatcher. The match’s conclusion was somewhat marred by a breakdown in interaction, both from the commentary team struggling to keep pace with the action and Sane’s less-than-convincing sell of Bliss’s Sister Abigail finisher.Despite these minor hiccups, the match itself was enjoyable and showcased the potential of the women’s tag division.
Aleister Black’s Frustration Boils Over
Aleister Black’s ongoing feud with R-Truth took another turn when a chair-related confrontation during their match was thwarted by the referee.Truth capitalized on the distraction, rolling up Black for an unexpected victory. The animosity didn’t end there, as Black’s backstage ambush attempt on Truth was intercepted by Damian Priest.Priest’s advice to let it go was met with a deceptive nod from Black, who then redirected his aggression towards Priest himself, signaling a potential new conflict brewing.
Tiffany Stratton vs. Trish Stratus: A Championship Build-Up
The final angle leading into the Tiffany Stratton vs. Trish Stratus women’s championship match featured an in-ring interview with Wade Barrett. Stratton articulated her desire to face and defeat one of the greatest of all time to solidify her own legacy, having already overcome a formidable list of stars. Stratus, in response, delivered a somewhat underwhelming promo, reiterating her status as one of the best and her certainty of victory. The segment saw the two trade barbs about their ages, but ultimately ended with a mutual, albeit grudging, respect. The appearance of naomi, reminding both of her Money in the Bank briefcase, was quickly overshadowed by Jade Cargill’s blindsided attack, a perfect, albeit cynical, encapsulation of the contract’s current perceived value. The build-up for this championship match felt somewhat lacking, with the potential of the contest seemingly being diluted by the focus on other storylines.
Overall Verdict
This week’s NXT was a serviceable episode, offering nothing overtly bad but also failing to deliver any truly standout moments. The show felt like it was treading water, with predictable booking decisions and a lack of genuine surprise. While the talent is undeniable, the creative direction could benefit from a bolder approach to truly captivate the audience.
