AI Smart Glasses: tech Giants Race to ⁤Replace Smartphones

Updated June 15, ⁤2025

A new wave of tech companies are vying⁤ for a spot in ‍the emerging market⁤ of AI smart glasses. Snap recently announced⁢ plans to launch AI-equipped eyewear in 2026, joining the likes of apple and Amazon in the race to develop wearable technology that could eventually replace smartphones.

The renewed interest stems from a‍ desire to capitalize on advancements in artificial intelligence ⁣and the slowing excitement around smartphone upgrades. ‍Emerging AI models can now process images, video, and speech simultaneously,⁢ enabling more useful and conversational interactions.

Market research indicates strong potential for growth. ABI research estimates the smart glasses market will jump from 3.3 million units shipped ‍in 2024 to⁤ nearly 13 million by 2026. The International Data Corporation (IDC) projects similar growth for Meta-like smart ‍glasses, forecasting an increase from 8.8 million in 2025 to almost 14 million in 2026.

Apple is reportedly developing its own smart glasses, slated for release next year,to compete directly with Meta. Amazon’s head of devices and services, Panos Panay,⁣ hinted at the possibility of camera-equipped Alexa glasses in a February interview.

More then two million Ray-Ban Meta AI ⁢glasses have⁤ been sold since their launch in 2023. However, convincing consumers to adopt another tech device, especially those who do not⁤ require⁢ prescription glasses, remains ⁤a challenge.

jitesh Ubrani, a research manager at IDC, believes smart⁤ glasses could eventually replace ‍smartphones. “Many in ⁣the⁣ industry believe⁢ that the smartphone will eventually be replaced⁢ by glasses or something⁢ similar ⁢to it,” Ubrani said. “Its ⁢not going to happen today. It’s going to happen many years from now, and all these companies want to make sure that they’re not going to ⁤miss out on⁢ that change.”

What’s next

The coming years will likely ‍see intense competition and innovation in the AI smart glasses market as tech⁢ giants vie to create devices that seamlessly integrate into⁣ daily life ‍and offer compelling alternatives to smartphones.
