Smart Investment: Maurizio Cattelan’s Duct-Taped Banana Artwork Sells for $5.2M at Sotheby’s
Maurizio Cattelan‘s artwork, titled Comedian, features a banana duct-taped to a wall. It sold for US$5.2 million at a recent auction, exceeding initial estimates of US$1 million to US$1.5 million. This piece debuted at Sotheby’s New York during a contemporary art auction.
The auction began with a starting bid of US$800,000. Bids quickly rose in a competitive atmosphere, accepting cryptocurrency bids. Oliver Barker, the auctioneer, made light of the high price, saying, “I never thought I’d say ‘$5 million for a banana.’”
The winning bid came from Jen Hua of Sotheby’s China office on behalf of Justin Sun, a Chinese-born crypto entrepreneur. Sun will pay a total of US$6.2 million, including fees. He will receive not just the banana but also duct tape, a certificate of authenticity, and installation instructions.
Sun commented, “This is not just an artwork; it represents a cultural phenomenon that bridges the worlds of art, memes, and the cryptocurrency community.” He also expressed his intention to eat the banana to honor its significance in art and popular culture.
Comedian is one of three editions created in 2019. It first made headlines at Art Basel Miami, where it had a price tag of US$120,000. The piece gained viral fame when performance artist David Datuna ate the banana during the fair. This event inspired similar stunts, including one by a South Korean student in May 2023.
Cattelan described Comedian as a commentary on societal values. He noted that he aimed to disrupt the typical art auction environment, stating, “If I had to be at a fair, I could sell a banana like others sell their paintings.”
