Melissa Auf der Maur Joins Billy Corgan Onstage in Montreal
Updated June 16, 2025
Billy Corgan and his new band, Machines of God, are currently on the A Return to Zero Tour, performing Smashing Pumpkins hits from albums such as Mellon Collie and the Infinite sadness and Machina/The Machines of God. During a Montreal show Friday, former Smashing Pumpkins touring bassist Melissa Auf der Maur made a surprise appearance.
Auf der Maur joined the band at Théâtre Beanfield during the encore.Fan videos show the crowd erupting in cheers as she recounted her first encounter with Corgan. She recalled meeting him July 23, 1991, after a show, apologizing for a thrown beer bottle and vowing to follow him forever.
“Billy, do you remember the first words we ever exchanged, on July 23rd, 1991?” she asked. “I walk to the side of the stage, after you played ‘I Am One.’ And you were packing up your gear, and do you remember what I said? I said, ‘On behalf of Montreal, Canada, I apologize for the broken beer bottle that was thrown at him, and I am Melissa from Montreal and I will follow you ‘til the end of time.’”
Corgan and Auf der Maur then performed “The everlasting Gaze” from the album Machina. Auf der Maur replaced D’arcy Wretzky as the pumpkins’ touring bassist in 1999 and remained with the band until December 2000.
Corgan formed Machines of God for the A Return to Zero Tour because of disagreements with Smashing Pumpkins bandmates James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlin. Corgan said they have an agreement that if they are not in alignment, no one will force an issue.
“We weren’t in agreement about what the purpose of such a thing might be for,” Corgan said.“And we have this agreement, which has been really helpful over the pasts seven or eight years, that says if we’re not in alignment about something like that, nobody is going to pull rank and say it has to be done.”
The Billy Corgan tour with Machines of God concludes June 29 at the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis. In July, Corgan will tour Europe, Asia, and the Middle East with the Smashing Pumpkins.
What’s next
Following the current tour, Corgan will join the Smashing Pumpkins for their international tour, bringing their music to fans across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
