Brighton & Hove Albion Women face a challenging test on Sunday, , as they welcome Arsenal to Broadfield Stadium. While the Seagulls aim to halt a concerning slide in form, Arsenal are looking to maintain their unbeaten run in the Women’s Super League and build momentum following a midweek Champions League victory.
Arsenal secured a convincing 4-0 win against OH Leuven in the Champions League on Wednesday, with young forward Mia Smith playing a pivotal role. Smith’s speed and timing were on full display as she scored the match-winning goal, prompting praise from Arsenal manager Renée Slegers.
“We’ve seen a couple of things that are new to us [about Smith] and that is the beautiful part,” Slegers said. “She is obviously a very good dribbler but what she does really well in those central spaces is combining with Alessia [Russo] and Frida [Maanum] in the number 10 role behind, they have some great combinations. Her timing and movement is really good and she is such an explosive player so anything that drops in the box she is so quick to react.”
With Stina Blackstenius still sidelined and Beth Mead unavailable due to a hairline fracture in her shin, Smith is expected to continue in the central attacking role against Brighton. Her recent performance suggests she is adapting quickly and providing a valuable attacking outlet for the Gunners.
However, Brighton will pose a threat, particularly recalling their 4-2 victory over Arsenal at Broadfield Stadium last season. Despite their recent struggles – four defeats in their last five league outings – the Seagulls have demonstrated the ability to trouble top teams. They recently secured a dramatic 3-2 win over Everton, showcasing their resilience and attacking capabilities.
Slegers acknowledged Brighton’s potential, stating, “They have had a challenging run but I think they are a good team. Last year away wasn’t a good performance and we lost that game, so we know what they can do.” She also highlighted Brighton’s tactical flexibility, noting their unpredictable approach. “They have an aggressive press but last time round when we played them away they did something completely different. We will see what their game plan is.”
Arsenal currently sit fifth in the WSL table, but a win on Sunday could see them climb to fourth, depending on the result of Manchester United’s match against Everton. They are aiming for a third consecutive WSL win and remain unbeaten in the league since October. The team is keen to put recent setbacks – defeats to Lyon and Manchester City, and draws with Aston Villa and Manchester United – behind them and regain winning momentum.
Slegers emphasized the team’s improved position compared to last year, stating, “As a team, we are in a better place than we were a year ago. That has all gone into our backpack so we know we have all of those experiences of how to deal with different moments as a team.” This suggests a greater level of tactical preparedness and mental fortitude within the Arsenal squad.
Brighton’s Michelle Agyemang and Rosa Kafaji are ineligible to play against Arsenal due to being on loan from the North London club. This will impact Brighton’s attacking options, potentially weakening their forward line.
The match promises to be a compelling encounter, pitting Arsenal’s recent resurgence and attacking flair against Brighton’s home advantage and unpredictable tactics. Arsenal will be looking to capitalize on their Champions League momentum and solidify their position in the WSL top four, while Brighton will be desperate to end their losing streak and prove they can compete with the league’s elite.
Kick-off is scheduled for on Sunday, and the match will be broadcast live as part of MOTD Live.
