Smokey Robinson ⁣Countersues Housekeepers for $500M in‌ Defamation

 Updated May 30, 2025

Motown legend Smokey ⁣robinson has filed a ⁤$500 million defamation lawsuit against⁢ four former housekeepers who accused him of sexual assault earlier this month. The 85-year-old singer and his wife, Frances, claim the women ⁢fabricated their ⁢allegations to ‌extort money.

The‍ women, who ⁤remain anonymous, alleged that Robinson subjected‍ them to multiple sexual assaults between 2007 and 2024. ⁣They also accused Robinson and his wife of labor violations, including failing⁢ to pay minimum wage and overtime, submitting inaccurate wage ⁢statements, and ‌creating a antagonistic⁢ work habitat.

Robinson denies the allegations of sexual assault ⁤and labor violations. He and his wife contend that the women worked for them for years, received financial assistance, vacationed with them, and celebrated holidays together. They argue that the ‍lawsuit is an ⁢attempt to wrongfully destroy their reputations.

The⁣ lawsuit states that the women’s “avarice and greed knows no ‍bounds,” accusing them of ‌plotting “to ⁣take everything from⁢ the Robinsons…and wrongfully destroy the Robinsons’ well-built reputations.”

Robinson is also facing a criminal inquiry in⁣ Los⁢ Angeles regarding the allegations. His lawyers previously filed a motion to dismiss ⁣the women’s case, ‍arguing against their anonymity.

The housekeepers, all of Hispanic⁣ origin, ⁣claim they remained silent due to fears about their reputations and immigration status. They are seeking $50 million in damages and ‍a jury ⁤trial. They also allege that Frances Robinson used “ethnically pejorative words and⁤ language” and was aware of⁤ her husband’s alleged conduct.

“We believe she was aware of the misconduct by her husband … and that she used their status and also our clients’ reliance on their living ‍wage to keep them ‌in ⁤check,” said ‌lawyer Herbert Hayden.

What’s next

The legal battle between⁣ Smokey robinson and his former housekeepers is expected to continue in ⁤Los⁢ Angeles County‍ Superior Court. Both the defamation lawsuit and the criminal investigation are ongoing.
