SMU Football Coach Rhett Lashlee Signs Contract Extension Amid Successful Season
DALLAS (SMU) – SMU’s Head Football Coach Rhett Lashlee has extended his contract, according to a school announcement on Friday.
Lashlee is in his third season coaching the Mustangs. Under his leadership, the team has a record of 9-1. They are undefeated in conference play, ranked No. 13 in the CFP Rankings, and close to reaching the ACC Championship Game in SMU’s first year in the conference. In 2023, he led the Mustangs to their first conference title since 1984. The team has won 18 of their last 20 games and 17 of the last 18 regular-season games.
Lashlee expressed his excitement about staying with SMU, saying, “Lauren, Hudson, Thomas, Rowyn, Scarlet, and I are all so excited to be Mustangs. We look forward to building upon our success and making our mark on college football’s national stage.” He thanked SMU’s leadership for their support.
Rick Hart, SMU’s Athletics Director, expressed confidence in Lashlee, stating, “Rhett was the clear choice when we conducted our head-coaching search in 2021. He has operated in alignment with our values and represents SMU with class and integrity.” Hart noted that Lashlee has been an important partner during changes in college athletics.
