Professional snooker players have launched a new players’ association, the Professional Players’ Snooker Association (PSPA), in a move signaling growing player desire for greater control over the sportS direction and a stronger voice in commercial matters. The formation comes after a period of unrest, including discussions surrounding a potential breakaway tour during the 2024 World Championship.
A Player-Led Response to Growing concerns
The PSPA aims to “enhance the sport’s future, while safeguarding player welfare and commercial interests,” according to a statement released by the association. This initiative is largely driven by a feeling amongst top players that they lack sufficient input into the World Snooker Tour’s (WST) operations, particularly regarding lucrative commercial opportunities.
The association boasts a powerful players’ board comprised of some of the biggest names in snooker: judd Trump, Kyren Wilson, Mark Selby, Barry Hawkins, Shaun Murphy, Ali Carter, Gary Wilson, Stuart Bingham, Jack Lisowski, Stephen Maguire, Mark Allen, Ryan Day, and Joe Perry. Matthew Selt has been appointed a director, alongside legal experts Ben rees and Mark Kenkre, ensuring the PSPA has robust legal backing.
Notably, seven-time world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan has pledged his membership, alongside Chinese stars Ding Junhui and Xiao Guodong.”I’ve had lots of discussions with Ronnie,” said a spokesperson. “He’s really excited about it, so it’s full steam ahead.” This widespread support from leading figures underscores the seriousness of the players’ concerns.
The Threat of a Breakaway and the Rise of Saudi Investment
The impetus for the PSPA’s creation stems, in part, from recent approaches made to top players regarding participation in highly profitable events in China and North America. These offers sparked discussions about forming a rival tour, a prospect that gained traction during the 2024 World Championship at the Crucible.Currently, professional players are contractually obligated to refrain from competing in unsanctioned events while WST tournaments are ongoing, although recent negotiations have introduced some adaptability. However, the potential for significantly increased earnings outside of the WST framework clearly motivated players to seek greater agency.
The World Snooker Tour has responded to player concerns by increasing prize money across its events. A key growth is the introduction of a “fourth major” tournament in Saudi Arabia, boasting a prize fund exceeding £2 million. The second Saudi arabia Snooker Masters is set to take place later this week in Jeddah, demonstrating WST’s commitment to expanding revenue streams and attracting investment.
PSPA Objectives: Legal Support and Player Welfare
The PSPA isn’t simply a reactive measure to the threat of a breakaway. It’s designed to proactively protect players’ interests. The association, formed with guidance from leading sports law professionals, will provide legal and commercial support to players in areas such as sponsorship, broadcasting rights, and contractual negotiations.
The WPBSA (world Professional Billiards and Snooker Association) established its own players’ body in 2020, with a mandate to represent members’ collective interests regarding welfare and issues affecting the professional game. The PSPA aims to complement this work, acting as a direct channel for player concerns and providing a platform to raise issues at the highest levels of the WPBSA.
Specifically, the PSPA will focus on:
Protecting players’ Rights: Ensuring fair contracts and sponsorship deals.
Commercial Depiction: Maximizing revenue opportunities for players.
Welfare Support: Addressing player wellbeing and providing necesary resources.
Collective Bargaining: Negotiating with the WST on behalf of all members.
The formation of the PSPA represents a notable shift in the power dynamics within professional snooker. By uniting and establishing a strong, independent voice, players are signaling their determination to shape the future of the sport and secure a more equitable and enduring habitat for all.
