Snorlax‘s Origins: A Personal Tribute
Snorlax isn’t just one of the largest and most iconic Pokémon from the first generation; it’s arguably the most recognizable creature in the entire franchise. The Pokémon enjoys widespread global popularity, but many don’t know its biggest secret: snorlax was originally created as a personal homage to Koji nishino, a key and long-tenured developer at Game freak.
Nishino has worked on Pokémon as the very beginning, contributing to the initial development of the first two games. He designed the game map and established crucial parameters like wild Pokémon encounter rates and spawn locations. But what’s most interesting is that Nishino himself was incorporated into the game as a Pocket Monster. Art director Ken Sugimori designed a large Pokémon with a calm and friendly expression, naming it Kabigon (Snorlax’s original Japanese name).
