Snorlax‘s Origins: A Personal Tribute

Snorlax isn’t just one of the largest and most iconic Pokémon from ⁣the first generation; it’s arguably the most ‌recognizable creature in the entire franchise. The Pokémon enjoys widespread global popularity, but many don’t⁣ know its biggest secret: snorlax was originally created as a personal homage to Koji nishino, a key and long-tenured developer at Game freak.

Nishino has‌ worked on Pokémon ⁣as the very beginning, contributing ⁣to the ⁤initial development of the first two ‍games.‍ He⁣ designed the game map and established crucial parameters⁤ like wild Pokémon encounter rates and spawn locations. But what’s most interesting ‍is that Nishino himself was incorporated into the game ‌as a Pocket Monster. Art director Ken Sugimori designed ⁣a ⁤large Pokémon with a calm and friendly expression, ⁢naming it Kabigon ‍(Snorlax’s original Japanese name).
