Severe Weather Disrupts Travel and Daily Life Across Europe

A series of winter storms are causing widespread disruption across Europe, bringing heavy snow, strong winds and prompting school closures and travel warnings. Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom are among the countries grappling with the severe weather conditions.

Italy Faces Snow and Civil Defense Alerts

Italy is currently experiencing severe weather, with a series of Atlantic disturbances creating vortices over the Mediterranean. This is resulting in continued snowfall across the country. February 3rd is expected to see no school closures, according to forecasts for Florence and San Remo. However, the weather in Italy is described as unstable at the beginning of February, triggering widespread civil defense alerts. A powerful storm impacted the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy in January, causing heavy snow and widespread disruption, with Italy’s national fire service responding to numerous incidents.

Spain Grapples with Storm Kristin

Parts of Spain are recovering from Storm Kristin, which forced school closures in Extremadura, Ceuta, and 77 municipalities in Andalusia as of January 28th. Spain’s national weather agency, Aemet, issued a special warning forecasting snow at altitudes as low as 600-700 meters and strong winds. Authorities warned of dangerous driving conditions in mountainous regions due to snow and ice, and of flooding caused by heavy rainfall. Coastal areas along the Mediterranean were also on alert for strong waves and potential damage to infrastructure. In Andalusia, in-person schooling was suspended in parts of Almeria, Malaga and Cadiz due to extreme weather risks.

United Kingdom Braces for Heavy Snow

Southwest England is bracing for significant snowfall, with emergency alerts issued to residents. The weather has already led to numerous school closures and travel disruption across the UK. Similar conditions are persisting elsewhere in Europe, with the Netherlands having experienced easing weather conditions as of January 8th.

Attica, Greece on High Alert

Authorities in Attica, Greece, placed the region on red alert on January 20th due to forecasts of heavy rainfall. The preventive closure of facilities was implemented in anticipation of significant flooding.

School Closures Anticipated

AccuWeather’s Snow Day index predicts no school closures for Tuesday, February 3rd or Wednesday, February 4th in Florence and San Remo, Italy. However, the broader impact of the storms across Europe suggests further disruptions are possible.

Ongoing Weather Systems

The severe weather is linked to a series of weather systems, including Storm Kristin and previous storms like Storm Joseph. The continued arrival of Atlantic disturbances suggests that unsettled weather conditions are likely to persist in the region.
