Snow and Ice Disrupt Travel Across Belgium, With Colder Temperatures Expected

Belgium is bracing for continued winter weather disruptions as snow and ice continue to impact travel across the country. Following a lingering cold snap after New Year’s Eve, conditions have led to flight delays, train cancellations, and hazardous road conditions, particularly impacting commuters returning to work.

Several regions are already experiencing significant impacts. On January 4th, ground handlers at Brussels and Liège airports reported de-icing queues twice the seasonal norm, with aircraft requiring an average of 14 minutes for glycol spraying – double the usual time.

Rail travel has also been affected. Infrabel, the rail infrastructure manager, imposed a speed cap of 20 km/h on exposed tracks in Wallonia, adding up to ten minutes to inter-city journeys and complicating connections for Eurostar and Thalys services at Brussels-South station. Highway operator Viapass reported a spike in minor accidents on the E40 near Namur, highlighting the widespread impact of the icy conditions.

The disruption extends to air travel. Flights and train service were canceled or suspended in parts of France and Belgium, according to reports from January 8th. Corporate travel desks have been scrambling to re-book delayed staff returning from the holiday period, and some manufacturers have shifted urgent components from passenger planes to dedicated freighters at Liège Cargo Airport to circumvent delays.

The Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI) forecasts a gradual thaw, but airport authorities have warned that de-icing fluid stocks are running low after what has been described as the busiest Christmas peak since 2019. This raises concerns about the ability to respond to further snowfall events.

Travelers are advised to build extra time into their journeys and to check with airlines for updated information regarding potential delays or cancellations. Mobility advisors recommend checking airline waivers that allow for free date changes. For non-EU travelers close to exhausting their 90-day Schengen allowance, documenting any force majeure delays – such as weather-related disruptions – is crucial, as immigration auditors are increasingly requesting boarding pass stubs and weather alerts when reviewing overstay defenses.

Looking ahead, temperatures are expected to drop significantly, with some areas potentially experiencing lows of -10°C overnight this weekend. This cold weather, combined with the possibility of further snow, means that the challenging conditions are likely to persist for at least the next few days.

While the week has been characterized by gloomy, grey, and rainy weather, the weekend may bring snow to Belgium, according to the RMI. Maximum temperatures are currently hovering around 10°C, but are expected to fall sharply.
