Snubbed in the Bronx: The Baffling Case of Yankees Prospect Dominguez’s Overlooked Promotion
Yankees’ Decision to Not Promote Top Prospect Jason Dominguez Raises Questions
The New York Yankees have decided not to promote outfielder Jason Dominguez, their top prospect, despite the expansion of the roster. This decision has sparked confusion, especially given the struggles of veteran left fielder Alex Verdugo throughout the season.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone was asked about Dominguez’s non-promotion ahead of the team’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. Boone stated that there have been discussions about promoting Dominguez, but the team wants to ensure he can play every day. Dominguez has been in good form recently after recovering from an oblique injury.
Boone acknowledged that the decision is not set in stone, saying, “There’s no guarantee that it won’t change in a few days, a week or two weeks.” However, the decision to not promote Dominguez at this time raises questions about the Yankees’ commitment to winning the championship.
The Yankees had a chance to win first place in the American League in August with a 14-12 record, but they did not use Dominguez. Instead, they continue to start Alex Verdugo, who has had the worst batting average among major league left fielders for most of the season.
Verdugo’s statistics since May 1 are concerning. Among 23 qualified left fielders, he ranked last in wRC+ (71), OPS (.611), and BABIP (.254), while also ranking 20th in on-base percentage (36.4%).
The Yankees’ decision to stick with Verdugo over Dominguez is puzzling, especially given that Verdugo’s contract expires after the 2024 season. Promoting Dominguez would make more sense than sticking to the current failed strategy.
The Yankees have missed every opportunity to move ahead in the division, going 39-38 since June 1. They cannot afford to have holes in their lineup every day. The team’s decision to not promote Dominguez raises questions about their commitment to winning the championship.
