California is facing an early start to its 2026 wildfire season, driven by a lack of snowpack and drying conditions that have already triggered fires in multiple regions of the state.

State engineers conducting the symbolic April 1, 2026, snowpack measurement at Phillips Station, located south of Lake Tahoe, found no measurable snowpack. This absence of snow is a critical indicator for the state’s water levels and fuel moisture for the coming months.

Regional Fire Activity and Risks

Wildfire activity has already begun in Southern California and high-elevation areas of the state as of April 6, 2026.

According to CAL FIRE, high grass fuel loads and drying conditions in Southern California have increased the risk of large fires across various fuel types, including coastal grasses and timber.

The vulnerability of high-elevation forests has also been highlighted by early-season timber fires occurring in Mono County and areas of the Sierra above 7,000 feet.

Predictive Services and Monitoring

The National Interagency Coordination Center (NICC) provides 7-Day Significant Fire Potential Outlooks to assist fire management decision makers. These assessments are designed to improve proactive wildland fire management to protect lives and property and increase firefighting efficiency.

These outlooks are issued specifically when Geographic Areas are in fire season and Predictive Services staff are on duty. The National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook further identifies areas by month for the subsequent four months, categorizing them as having above, below, or near normal significant fire potential.

The NICC recently implemented changes to the High-Risk triggers available within these products to refine how potential threats are identified.
