Authorities in Russia’s Black Sea resort city of Sochi reopened public beaches on Oct. 8, after water and air tests showed no oil contamination following a Ukrainian naval drone attack that set a commercial tanker ablaze earlier in the week. According to The Moscow Times, consumer protection watchdog Rospotrebnadzor confirmed that seawater samples across the city met all sanitary standards, while satellite monitoring detected no remaining oil slicks off the coast.
Liberian-Flagged Tanker Catches Fire Off Sochi Coast
The incident began on the evening of Oct. 6, when a naval drone struck the Liberian-flagged Aframax tanker Rio off the coast of Sochi, triggering a massive fire and thick black smoke that blanketed parts of the resort city. Heavy crude oil burned openly in the waters of the Black Sea as intense flames prevented rescue vessels from initially approaching the stricken vessel. Built in 2004, the 247-meter-long tanker has a deadweight capacity of 107,100 metric tons and is under Ukrainian sanctions for allegedly operating within Russia’s shadow fleet.
Indian Crew Rescued As Blazes Are Extinguished
All 23 crew members on board the Aframax Rio, who are Indian nationals, were safely rescued during the emergency response. Russia’s Transportation Ministry stated that firefighting efforts succeeded in extinguishing the flames by Oct. 7, after which the vessel drifted along the coastline. Executive Ship Management, the ship’s operator, confirmed that officials and senior crew members boarded the tanker on Oct. 7 to inspect its structural condition, while the Mash Telegram news channel reported via unidentified sources that the ship was fully loaded with crude oil at the time of the strike.
Regional Maritime Shipping Faces Escalating Drone Strikes
The attack on the Aframax Rio coincides with broader maritime security escalations across the Black Sea involving commercial shipping lanes. On the same day as the Sochi tanker strike, two commercial vessels were hit by drones in the exclusive economic zone of NATO member Bulgaria. Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev condemned those strikes as an unacceptable violation of international law, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy blamed Russia for the Bulgarian-zone attacks during regional security updates.
Environmental Monitoring And Safety Clearances In Sochi
Following the extinguishment of the offshore fire, municipal authorities in Sochi and the neighboring federal territory of Sirius lifted coastal restrictions implemented after the Oct. 6 explosion. Sirius administration head Dmitry Plishkin announced that local testing found zero traces of oil in seawater samples and confirmed that air pollution parameters remained within legal permitted limits. City officials authorized the reopening of local beaches on Oct. 8 after receiving verification from environmental inspectors that public health risks had cleared.

This is an unacceptable attack in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone. It is a blatant violation of international law and maritime law.
Rumen Radev
