Jakarta – The Indonesian Ministry of Social Affairs is launching a complete crackdown on the misuse of social assistance (bansos) funds, with a particular focus on recipients involved in online gambling and those with untouched funds in their accounts. This initiative aims to ensure that aid reaches the truly deserving and is utilized for its intended purpose.
Unmasking the Misuse: Online Gambling and Dormant Accounts
The Ministry, led by Minister Saifullah Yusuf, commonly known as Gus Ipul, revealed that the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) has identified a notable number of social aid beneficiaries whose National Identity Numbers (NIK) have been used for online gambling. This discovery has prompted immediate action to address the integrity of the social aid distribution system.
“Number (NIK) was used for online gambling purposes,” Gus Ipul stated during a meeting at the Ministry of Social affairs in Jakarta on Tuesday, july 29, 2025.
Further investigations will be conducted on the accounts of several bansos recipients who are suspected of never having withdrawn their allocated funds. PPATK reports indicate that approximately Rp2.1 trillion in bansos funds has remained unclaimed across 10 million accounts over the past three years. This ample amount of dormant funds raises questions about the effectiveness of the current distribution and monitoring mechanisms.
Fortifying the System: Collaboration and New detection Measures
To bolster the accuracy and fairness of social aid distribution, the Ministry of Social Affairs is set to collaborate with Bank Indonesia. This partnership will focus on identifying anomalies and balances exceeding Rp1 million in recipients’ accounts.
“There should be no anomalies or balances that are unreasonable,” Gus Ipul emphasized, highlighting the commitment to a transparent and accountable system.
The Ministry’s proactive approach extends to implementing stricter checks and balances. By working with Bank Indonesia, they aim to detect any irregularities that might indicate misuse or a lack of genuine need among recipients.
Reallocating resources: Replacing Misusers with the Deserving
Following these investigations, three categories of bansos recipients will face consequences: those implicated in online gambling, those with stagnant funds in their accounts, and those exhibiting unreasonable account balances. These individuals will be replaced by more deserving recipients, ensuring that the aid is channeled to those who genuinely require it.
“This is in line with the objective of targeted bansos based on a Single Data of National Social and Economic,” Gus Ipul added, underscoring the Ministry’s dedication to accurate and needs-based aid distribution.
Sanctions for Online Gambling Offenders
Previously,Minister Saifullah Yusuf had outlined a clear framework for sanctions against social aid recipients found to be involved in online gambling. the government has prepared three options for disciplinary action:
Warning and Guidance: For first-time offenders or minor involvement, a formal warning and guidance will be issued to educate them on the repercussions of their actions and the purpose of social aid.
temporary Revocation of Recipient Status: Individuals with more significant involvement or repeat offenses may face a temporary suspension of their social aid benefits.
* Permanent Removal from the Social Aid Recipient List: In the most severe cases, recipients found to be persistently misusing the system or engaging in illicit activities like online gambling will be permanently removed from the government’s social aid recipient list.
“We will implement various measures,” Minister Saifullah stated at the People’s Representative Council Building, Jakarta, on Monday, July 7, 2025, signaling a firm stance against any form of misuse that undermines the integrity of social welfare programs.
The Ministry’s robust actions are a testament to its commitment to ensuring that social assistance programs effectively serve their intended purpose of alleviating poverty and supporting vulnerable populations across Indonesia.
