While there is no cure for dementia, lifestyle adjustments can keep the brain active and engaged. Social interaction is a crucial part of this effort.
This is the philosophy behind the “meeting bus” initiative in Limburg Kerkrade.
A significant part of the campaign, dubbed “we are the medicine ourselves,” emphasizes a healthy lifestyle, according to Remco van Vliet of The Salvation Army,
which is involved in the initiative. The organization, in collaboration with Kerkrade city, established the ‘Meeting Bus’ along with other preventive measures.
Healthy Lifestyle
“A medicine is not against dementia,” says Van Vliet. “What you can do is pursue a healthy lifestyle: sufficient exercise, good food, mental challenge, and sufficient interaction. The latter is where the ‘meeting bus,’ converted SRV car,

It is parked for six days a week at six different locations in Kerkrade, where people gather for coffee and dessert. Van Vliet explains,
