Social Democrats Lead Romanian Elections, Far-Right Makes Gains
Romanian Election Results show Rise of Far-Right, Fragmented Parliament
Bucharest, Romania – Romania’s ruling Social Democratic Party (PSD) emerged as the frontrunner in Sunday’s parliamentary elections, but a surge in support for the far-right AUR party threatens to create a fragmented parliament and complicate government formation.According to exit polls released by independent institute CURS, the PSD secured approximately 26% of the vote. Meanwhile, the AUR party, known for its nationalist and anti-immigrant rhetoric, is projected to double its representation from the previous election, garnering around 19% of the vote.
These results, if confirmed, signal a significant shift in Romanian politics. A fragmented parliament coudl lead to protracted negotiations and potential instability in forming a governing coalition.
The election comes on the heels of a controversial first round held on November 24th, which saw the unexpected victory of ultra-right candidate Calin Georgescu. The outcome sparked concerns about electoral integrity, with authorities suggesting potential Russian interference and the role of social media platforms like TikTok. A recount ordered by the Constitutional Court is currently underway.
“Romanians have sent a clear message to the political establishment,” stated Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, a Social Democrat who was eliminated from the presidential race last week. “They want to remain on the path of European integration, but also to protect their identity and national values.”
The final results are expected in the coming days, and the political landscape in Romania remains in flux.
