Sofia Mayor Announces New Public Transportation Expansion
Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev unveiled plans today for a important expansion of the city’s public transportation network. The project, slated to begin construction in the spring of 2026, aims to alleviate traffic congestion and improve accessibility across the Bulgarian capital.
The expansion includes three key components: a 5-kilometer extension of the existing Metro Line 1, adding four new stations; the introduction of 20 new electric buses serving the outer districts; and the creation of dedicated bus lanes along Vitosha Boulevard and Tsarigradsko Shose. The Metro extension will connect the residential areas of Lyulin and obelya more directly to the city center.
“This investment demonstrates our commitment to a modern, sustainable Sofia,” Mayor Terziev stated during a press conference. “We’re prioritizing efficient and affordable transportation options for all residents.”
Funding for the project will come from a combination of municipal bonds and European Union infrastructure grants. The total cost is estimated at 180 million leva (approximately $103 million USD as of January 20, 2026).city officials anticipate the project will create over 500 construction jobs.
critics have raised concerns about potential disruptions during construction. The city plans to mitigate these issues through phased construction and public awareness campaigns. Detailed construction schedules will be published on the city’s website (https://www.sofia.bg/en) starting february 1, 2026.
The new electric buses are expected to reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 15% annually. The buses will feature accessibility features for passengers with disabilities. Information about bus routes and schedules will be available through the Sofia urban Mobility Center (https://www.sofiatransport.bg/en/).
The project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2028.
