Recently, the domestic 3A game “Black Myth: Wukong” was released, and its strong Chinese cultural characteristics amazed overseas netizens. “An online game product that carries excellent culture can promote Chinese stories and Chinese images to the world, and also let the world understand China.” Xiamen Mengjia Network Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Mengjia Network”), headquartered in Phase 3 of Jimei Software Park, has been deeply engaged in the overseas field since its establishment in 2011, focusing on Chinese historical and cultural themes, and spreading Chinese culture to the world through games.
“When we launched our first game product, we chose to release it globally simultaneously. Other game companies usually release it domestically first and only consider going overseas after achieving good results,” said Tan Yukun, public affairs director of Dreamplus Network. In April this year, Dreamplus Network launched a new mobile game. “The game was well received by European and American players after it was launched, and entered the top three in the download rankings in the United States on the day it was launched.”
So far, Mengjia Network has launched a number of excellent works such as “Dream Heroes”, “Sultan’s Game” and ”Khan’s Game”, with more than 100 million users worldwide, covering more than 180 countries and regions such as Russia, South Africa, Brazil, India, Turkey, etc., and has released more than 20 language versions of its products. “Currently, there are more than 10 million game users in Russia, accounting for one-third of the Russian mobile game population; there are also 7 to 8 million users in Turkey.” Tan Yukun said.
As a leading company in China’s digital culture export, Mengjia Network has been selected into the list of the top 30 Chinese mobile game manufacturers in terms of overseas revenue for three consecutive years. In October 2023, Mengjia Network was selected as the “National Key Cultural Export Enterprise for 2023-2024” - since 2019, Mengjia Network has won this national honor for six consecutive years, and the project it operates has also won the “Online Games Based on China’s Excellent Traditional Culture” National Cultural Export Key Project.
Tan Yukun introduced that the company is considering incorporating more Chinese elements into the game to promote the spread and exchange of culture among players from all over the world. “For our strategy development game, since most of the users are female, we are considering introducing Chinese historical figures such as Wu Zetian in subsequent updates.” Mengjia Network also plans to add some traditional folk activities to the game. “Mid-Autumn Festival is coming soon, and we may add mooncake theme activities to the game.” Tan Yukun said, “Just like now foreigners are looking for the original novel to understand the story of Black Myth: Wukong in order to play it.”
In recent years, Jimei District has used Xiamen Software Park Phase III as the main carrier to gather and cultivate a number of digital cultural and creative enterprises with games, animation and metaverse as the core, incubated companies such as Mengjia Network and Zhenyouqu Information, and created a number of animation brand images with domestic and international influence. With the empowerment of innovative technologies such as VR, AR, and artificial intelligence, Jimei District has actively built a new animation and game industry ecosystem, issued support policies to encourage the development and overseas distribution of original high-quality games, and promoted game companies to go overseas. The scale of the industry has continued to expand, and gradually formed a new pattern of coordinated development of key industries such as games, animation and metaverse, and film and television, cultural tourism, and artistic creativity.
