Solar Energy Boom in the Czech Republic: A Shift Toward Larger Installations

The Czech Republic’s solar energy landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, with photovoltaic (PV) systems becoming a cornerstone of the nation’s renewable energy strategy. Last year, nearly 41,000 new PV systems were installed on family homes, contributing a combined output of 429 megawatts (MW). However, the spotlight has shifted toward larger-scale installations, as commercial and industrial projects now dominate the sector.

According to Svatopluk Vnouček, a member of the Board of Directors of the Czech Association of Regulated Electric Power Companies (ČSRES), the total installed capacity of PV systems for entrepreneurs and large power plants exceeded 539 MW in 2023. Over 3,500 commercial PV systems were connected to the grid, marking a notable shift in the market.

Despite this growth, the pace of residential solar adoption has slowed. In 2022, more than 80,000 family homes installed PV systems—double the number recorded last year. Jan Krčmář, executive director of the Solar Association, attributes this decline to reduced subsidies, lower electricity prices, and the suspension of subsidy applications three times in 2023. These factors have extended the return on investment for homeowners, making solar installations less attractive in the short term.

Krčmář also highlighted the challenges facing the sector in 2024, predicting a difficult year for installation companies. “Not all of them will survive,” he said, though he expects the total installed capacity to reach approximately 1 gigawatt (GW) this year.

The average size of residential PV systems has increased by 30% compared to the previous year, rising from 8 kilowatts (kW) to 10.5 kW. For commercial installations, the average size surged by 156%, jumping from 40 kW to over 100 kW. This trend reflects a growing preference for larger, more efficient systems that maximize energy production and storage capabilities.

Currently, the Czech Republic boasts 212,000 operational PV systems with a combined output of 4.4 GW. The Central Bohemian Region led the way in 2023, with 8,609 new installations, followed by the South Moravian Region (5,233) and the Moravian-Silesian Region (over 4,000). In contrast, the Karlovy Vary Region recorded the fewest installations, with fewer than 1,000 systems connected.

Energy Storage on the Rise

Energy storage is becoming an integral part of the solar energy ecosystem. Last year, 80% of residential PV systems were paired with batteries, boasting an average capacity of 11.7 kilowatt-hours (kWh). Among businesses, about half of new PV installations included battery storage.

Jan Fousko, executive director of the AKU-BAT Energy Storage Association, reported a 26% increase in battery system capacity, reaching nearly 2,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) in 2023. This growth underscores the importance of energy storage in ensuring a stable and reliable power supply.

Heat Pumps Gain Momentum

The adoption of heat pumps is also on the rise, with 27,000 new units installed last year, bringing the total to over 250,000. “Their number will continue to grow in the future,” Vnouček noted, highlighting the increasing popularity of this energy-efficient heating solution.

Infrastructure Investments Surge

The rapid expansion of renewable energy has necessitated significant investments in infrastructure. Last year, investments in the electricity grid reached 40 billion Czech crowns, an increase of 11 billion crowns compared to the annual average between 2010 and 2023.

Milan Hampl, chairman of the ČSRES Board of Directors, emphasized that these investments are critical to accommodating the growing number of PV systems and ensuring grid stability. However, rising costs for materials and labor have driven up expenses by approximately 35% between 2020 and 2024. As a result, electricity distribution fees are expected to increase by 1% annually until 2030.
