Solar Farms Kerry: 500 Hectares Plan Unveiled
North Kerry Set for Major Solar Energy Expansion with Two New Farm Proposals
Table of Contents
North kerry is poised for a significant boost in renewable energy generation with teh unveiling of plans for two substantial solar farms, collectively spanning over 500 hectares of agricultural land. These ambitious projects signal a strong commitment to clean energy solutions in the region, promising to power thousands of homes and contribute to carbon reduction efforts.
Knockanure Renewables Proposes Extensive Solar Farm
Knockanure Renewables (Kerry) Limited has put forward plans for a large-scale solar farm encompassing 354 hectares in the Knockanure area. This project is spearheaded by a consortium of local farmers who aim to leverage their land for enduring energy production, collaborating with like-minded neighbours.
Sustainable Land Use and Operational Longevity
A key feature of the Knockanure proposal is its emphasis on integrated land use. Approximately 70% of the 354-hectare site consists of open grasslands, which the developers state can continue to be utilized for grazing by smaller livestock around the solar panels. This approach highlights a commitment to maintaining agricultural activity alongside renewable energy generation. The solar farm is projected to be operational for a considerable period of 40 years, underscoring its long-term contribution to the local energy landscape.
Infrastructure and Grid connection
To support the new solar farm, a new substation is planned. Electricity generated will be transported via an underground cable grid connection, linking the new substation to the existing ESB Knockanure substation. This infrastructure development is crucial for efficiently integrating the new renewable energy source into the national grid.
BNRG laccamore Plans Dual Solar Farm Development
in a separate but equally significant development, BNRG Laccamore intends to construct two solar farms on distinct landholdings, totaling 154 hectares in North Kerry.
powering homes and Reducing Carbon Footprint
BNRG, a global solar energy company with a base in Dublin, plans to develop a 122-megawatt solar farm. This development is strategically divided into two sites: a 30-hectare plot in the townlands of Parkmore and Tullacrimeen, and a larger 124-hectare site that spans the townlands of Laccamore, Knocknacaska, and Fahavane. The company estimates that this solar farm will be capable of powering the equivalent of 21,600 household energy needs annually, while also achieving a substantial reduction of approximately 33,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year.
Advanced Grid Integration and Storage
The proposed BNRG solar farm will be connected to the grid through a loop-in substation, linking to the existing 110kV EirGrid transmission line. This connection is the subject of a separate planning application and will also incorporate a battery energy storage system. This advanced integration and storage capability will enhance grid stability and optimize the use of renewable energy. BNRG aims to have this solar farm operational by 2029.
