Sold Out by Sunrise: The Unprecedented Breakfast Rush That Took the Region by Storm
Elections in O’Higgins Region Proceeding Smoothly
According to O’Higgins’ Presidential Representative, Fabio López, the electoral process in the region is unfolding as predicted. By 10 am, all boards were already set up, and a significant number of voters had cast their ballots.
López, along with generals from the Army and Carabineros, as well as seremis from various portfolios, monitored the process from the UOCT facilities in Rancagua. The Deputy President emphasized the importance of this democratic action and the efforts made to ensure its success.
Security Measures in Place
Army General Juan Solari reported that over 1,000 soldiers were deployed in the region to guard 155 polling locations, with the remaining location being secured by the Gendarmerie at the Rancagua Penitentiary Center. Solari assured that all necessary measures had been taken in collaboration with the police to guarantee a successful day.
Regarding the operation of free fairs, Solari noted that necessary facilities were provided to ensure that the fairs did not affect the polling locations. Fairs located close to polling stations were relocated to avoid any disruptions.
Carabineros’ Role in Maintaining Order
General Max Jiménez, Head of the O’Higgins Zone, stated that Carabineros personnel were stationed at the perimeters of polling locations and main arteries of communities to ensure voters’ safety. Jiménez also reported that public transport was operating normally, and roads were clear for voters to access polling locations without issues.
Preventive Measures for Public Safety
Marcelo Montesinos, regional director of Senapred, announced a preventive early warning due to the high concentration of people and increased displacement flow throughout the region. This warning aims to raise awareness about potential risks, both natural and anthropogenic, and will remain in effect throughout the electoral process.
Public Transport and Special Services
The Ministry of Transport reported that 107 special services under contract were operating normally, with 61 subsidized services available in isolated and rural areas. The EFE San Fernando - Rancagua Alameda service also began operating without contingency plans. These services are free and aim to expand public transport coverage on election days.
Information on public transport services can be found on social media platforms @mttohiggins on Instagram and Twitter, Seremitt region of ohiggins on Facebook, and the website www.chilevotainformado.cl.
Health Precautions and Employee Rights
Seremi Carolina Torres urged voters to take necessary measures to avoid heat-related issues, such as hydrating, using sun cream, and wearing protective gear. Primary care services will operate as usual.
Seremi Labor and Social Security, Jaime Chamorro, reminded employers that they cannot prevent employees from exercising their right to vote. Employees can choose to vote on either Saturday or Sunday, and employers must allow board members to fulfill their civic duty. The Directorate of Labor can be reached at 6004504000 for complaints about labor offenses.
