A soldier stationed at the Hôpital d’instruction des armées Percy (Percy Training Hospital of the Armies) in Clamart, France, sustained serious injuries in an accidental shooting on February 15, 2026. The incident occurred overnight between Saturday and Sunday, prompting an immediate investigation.

According to a statement released by the Paris Defense Zone General Staff, the injured soldier was shot by a comrade using a handgun. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation. The victim was hospitalized immediately after the incident.

The alleged perpetrator has been taken into custody, and the investigation has been entrusted to the judicial police. Louis Mizon, the military governor of Paris, confirmed the investigation’s launch and expressed his support for the injured soldier and their family.

Hôpital Percy: A Military and Civilian Healthcare Center

The Hôpital d’instruction des armées Percy, commonly known as HIA Percy, is a significant military hospital located in Clamart, near Paris. Managed by the Service de santé des armées (French Defence Health service), it provides healthcare services to both military personnel and civilians. The hospital is named in honor of Pierre-François Percy, a military surgeon who served during the Napoleonic Wars.

HIA Percy is equipped to handle a wide range of medical needs, including emergency care, severe burn treatment, and the treatment of patients exposed to radioactivity, with a dedicated hematological service. The hospital has a history of treating high-profile individuals, including heads of state.

Past Notable Cases at HIA Percy

The hospital gained international attention in October 2004 when Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat was admitted for treatment and remained a patient until his death on November 11, 2004. During his stay, Arafat experienced a deepening coma despite intensive medical intervention.

In February 2005, Bassel Fleihan, a Lebanese legislator and Minister of Economy and Commerce, was airlifted to HIA Percy after suffering severe burns covering 95% of his body in a bombing in Beirut. He survived for 64 days at the hospital before ultimately succumbing to his injuries.

In October 2012, Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz was transported to HIA Percy for treatment after being accidentally shot by soldiers. He had initially received treatment at a military hospital in Nouakchott, Mauritania, before being flown to France. The French defense ministry confirmed his admission to the Percy-Clamart military hospital.

Context of Military Hospital Security

Incidents involving accidental shootings within military settings, while rare, underscore the inherent risks associated with firearms and the importance of stringent safety protocols. The investigation into the shooting at HIA Percy will likely focus on determining the factors that contributed to the incident, including potential equipment malfunctions, procedural errors, or lapses in judgment.

Military hospitals, like HIA Percy, present unique security challenges due to the presence of armed personnel and the potential for sensitive medical cases. Maintaining a secure environment while providing essential healthcare services requires a delicate balance of security measures and patient care considerations.

The investigation will also likely examine the training and psychological state of the soldiers involved, as well as the overall security procedures in place at the hospital. The goal is to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future and to ensure the safety of both patients and personnel.

The incident serves as a reminder of the potential for accidents even in highly controlled environments and the importance of continuous vigilance and improvement in safety protocols. Further details will emerge as the investigation progresses.
