Solheim Cup Showdown: USA Stages Thrilling Comeback to Dethrone European Champions
US Reclaims Solheim Cup for the First Time in Seven Years
The United States has reclaimed the Solheim Cup, the women’s golf competition against Europe, for the first time in seven years since 2017. The US team won the final match 15.5 to 12.5, beating the Europeans by three points.
The US had a strong start, leading 10 to 6 after the first two days of the competition. However, the Europeans fought back on the final day, winning 6.5 to 5.5 in the singles matches. Despite this, the US team held on to their lead, winning the final match by three points.
The US team’s victory was led by Megan Kang, Allison Corpuz, Rose Zhang, and Jennifer Kupcho, who all won their singles matches. Kang won by six holes with five left over Emily Pedersen, Corpuz won by four holes with three left over Anna Nordqvist, Zhang won by six holes with four left over Carlota Ciganda, and Kupcho won by two holes with one left over Lin Grant.
The Solheim Cup began in 1990 and is named after its founder, Ann Carsten Solheim. The competition takes place every two years, with the US and Europe alternating as hosts. The US has now won the Solheim Cup 10 times, with 8 losses and 1 draw.
US team manager Stacy Lewis praised her team’s performance, saying, “It’s really cool. Just watching them play was stressful. It’s horrible to watch. They’ve done a great job of getting through it. I’m really proud of them.” Lewis also praised Lilia Vu’s finish, saying, “It was unbelievable. She did what you’d expect from one of the best players in the world.”
European team captain Suzann Pettersen congratulated the US team on their victory, saying, “Congratulations to Lewis, the US general manager. We will fight back at home once again.” Pettersen also praised her team’s performance, saying, “I had a lot of fun with the players. It was a great journey. The Solheim Cup was really great.”
The 20th Solheim Cup will be held at Bernardus Golf in the Netherlands from September 7 to 13, 2026.
